Adelaide Roller Derby Girls Arm Wrestling for Charity

December 2009

Adelaide Roller Derby made a special Christmas contribution to “The Power of Women” in Adelaide this week by donating over $2000 to the YWCA. The roller-girls raised the money during this year’s hugely successful roller derby season. Fans were able to buy raffle tickets at bouts for the chance to arm wrestle their favourite derby girl at the end of the game. Team captains Pistola Balboa, Melvin Star and Violent Krumble delivered the cheque on skates to Belinda Lake, Project Manager for Youth Mentoring at YWCA Adelaide.

Adelaide derby fans paid $2 for their chance to take on the toughest derby girls in front of thousands of screaming roller-fans, not to mention the ring of roller-girls surrounding them in what can only be described as a “fight club” circle. A highlight and crowd favourite, this year’s raffle winners have included a 6'5” man taking on a girl ¼ of his size, two sisters battling it out in a sibling grudge match, and one lucky roller-girl who even got the chance to arm wrestle her boss. It's all for a good cause, though; as well as proving how tough they are, the derby girls are proud to be able to support such a worthwhile organisation as the YWCA. The derby crowd obviously agree, buying over a thousand tickets in order to donate to the great work of YWCA.

A spokesperson for Adelaide Roller Derby said: “It's important for us to be able to contribute to the development of women in our community, as we know from experience how incredible empowered women can be and what an asset to society they are. Being a derby girl is all about community contribution and bringing out the best in each other, and the YWCA youth mentoring program nurtures these values in the young women of Adelaide.”

ADRD's donation will go towards providing advocacy, support, empowerment and leadership for young women under 30 through the services, programs and campaigns provided by the YWCA.
